Hour 35 - Going to Bed with Edd

Edd finally awoke just before his show began at 8pm to host in Smoke's usual studios.

Just like last year Edd was rounding off another successful 'Marathon Broadcast'. He was joined by Doctor Lovell and had a competition between Team Sleepy and Team Awake and they either tried to make us tired or wake us up respectively.

Unfortunately Team Sleepy won the battle.

Me and Frosty stayed the full 35 hours and fully deserved our beds after that mammoth shift.

Thank you to everyone who listened, or came down to support us or who has read this blog.
We couldn't have done it without any of you.

Well done to all the presenters and producers and everyone behind the scenes who put on such a great event.

Viva la Smoke Radio.

Hour 34 - The Brainlokk MC Show

I was really worried that I would be hosting the Brainlokk MC show as Brainlokk was held up talking to the UWSU election candidates. He showed up just after 8pm though and played some great music from the likes of Nate Dogg and even some Craig David.

The show also featured the premiere of Brainlokk's newest track with the singer Hannah K called 'The Inside'.

Although me and Sam Foster have been here for thirty four hours now, my dedication award goes to Brainlokk as he is giving up the chance to watch the first half of the England - Ghana game at Wembley.

Here's hoping that they let him in at half time.

Only 1 more to go!!

Hour 33 - The AA Show

Anton Clark joined us for Hour 33 for an hour with the AA Show. He played the best of new music as well as chatting about all the tracks as well. He even managed to drop in some Charlie Sheen dubstep for me and Sam Foster to keep us awake.

Edd was well and truly resting up for his show now and completely missed Anton's show which was a shame.

It didn't faze fellow Essex boy Anton though as he put in a great show and made way for Brainlokk in Hour 34.

Only 2 more hours to go!!

Hour 32 - The Urban Lockdown Show

Tyrone Francis had his Urban Lockdown show for Hour 32 in the Marathon Broadcast.

The show which is fast becoming one of the most popular shows saw Tyrone celebrate the best of Urban music for an hour and was only an hour early of when the show normally goes out; on the Smoke Radio schedule.
.
Sam Foster was still hanging around for Hour 32 and he and I only had a few more hours left.

Only 3 more hours to go!!

Hour 31 - Frosty's Folk Jam

Frosty's Folk Jam returned in spectacular fashion today. Sam Foster aka is one of the two remaining originals - he started the broadcast off in Hour 1 and was back with a folk jam.

An abiding memory of the show will have to be Maggie's Farm by Bob Dylan, and if you like that song then you'll have loved Frosty's show.

Someone who was far too mellow for the music was Edd Cross, who was trying to catch fourty winks before his show at 8pm tonight. He was joined by Jacqui Ravensdale who wanted a picture with him.

The party is almost over for Smoke Radio.

Only 4 more hours to go!!

Hour 30 - Gentleman's Hour: Presents Hard Talk

Regular 'Gentleman' and 'Hard' talker Luke Beckett was ill today, but was suitably replaced by John Cadigan and Massimo Paradiso for Hour 30.

John and Massimo were joined by regular hosts Will Kisby and Bill Leuty as they spent an hour letting people into the Hard Talk: Hall of Fame.

John suggested Torquay defender Guy Branston, while Massimo elected Sir Ranulf Feinnes; and Branston and Feinnes soon found themselves among the luminaries of the Hard Talk: Hall of Fame.

This show like Signal has taken a little break from the schedule, but may I be the first to argue the case for it to come back permanently.

Only 5 more hours to go!!

Hour 29 - The World Music Show

World Music with John Cadigan took over Hour 29 of Smoke Radio's Marathon Broadcast. The show which normally goes out on Sunday's was live today as John came in all the way from Milton Keynes for this one hour World music extravaganza.

Bill Leuty who is a massive fan of the show hung around the studios dancing and bopping around to the music.

Only 6 more hours to go!!

Hour 28 - The Smoke Radio Rock Show

Smoke Radio came back upstairs for Hour 28 as the Zoo officially closed at 1pm - Bryony was ready for the listeners though as she gave them the perfect antedote though which Rock music based around animals.

The Smoke Radio Rock show is another relatively new show for Smoke Radio, but one which is really doing well with the listeners, rock shows had been the staple of the Smoke Radio schedule until Nick SD left at the end of last year.

As the show was going on various people drifted in and out and made the studio look more homely. Edd Cross was at hand with lots and lots of balloons.

All the shows would now be coming from the studio 'Zoo'.

Only 7 more hours to go!!

Hour 27 - Signal

Signal were back for a one off special just for the DJ Zoo. The show which seemed to be on a permanent hiatus after a successful 09-10 spell wanted a chance to perform for Smoke TV. The show was crammed with features including Will and Bill top trumps, which was won by Will this year as well as Edd's Nice News.

Who knows what the future may hold for the show. Signal may be back again, if the opportunity ever arises.

Venus De Milo popped in for a session and played two fantastic songs for us.

Unfortunately this was the last show that came live from the Zoo and the Smoke Radio team quickly packed up and led the presenters back upstairs to the Smoke Radio studios to carry on the marathon broadcast.

Only 8 more hours to go!!

Hour 26 - The Mass Debate

As the name suggests, the show is all about getting the views and opinions on the latest news stories through debate. A really good show for us in the Zoo who felt a little bit jaded as we found out the big talking points of the day.

There was also a session in the Zoo from Matt Tracker, who was performing for Smoke for the first ever time. He wasn't nervous though and performed a great set for our listeners.

Only 9 more hours to go!!

Hour 25 - Born to Be Mild

The first years were really doing Smoke Radio proud by now, so we decided to bump Born to be Mild up the schedule so they could perform in the Zoo as well.

George, Sam and Alex took their show around the campus and tried to involve as many people as possible with the roaming microphone.

Rhianne took over Smoke TV for a few minutes while Sam roamed around the Zoo with Zookeeper Bill.

Only 10 more hours to go!!

The end is in sight.

Hour 24 - Pop vs Not

Rachael and Jimmy entered the DJ Zoo at 9am in the morning for Pop vs Not. Rachael plays anything that is 'Pop' while Jimmy plays everything that is 'Not'. A great show to wake up the students as they entered the campus.

Will and Bill took over Camera duties for Hour 24, and did a somewhat fantastic job.

Only 11 hours to go!!

Tuesday 29 March 2011

Hour 23 - Southern Connectionz

Southern Connectionz finished their second hour with Luke Shasha cooking Bacon Sandwiches for everyone in the Zoo as well as his co host Jamie.

A regular feature throughout the day was Edd and his sleeping bag. Whenever he could catch fourty winks he would, even if it meant missing some of Smoke Radio's broadcasting.

Now only 12 hours left to go!!

Hour 22 - Southern Connectionz

Hour 22 turned into Smoke Radio DJ Zoo's Breakfast show with Jamie and Luke. They took full advantage of the early hours in the Zoo to rouse those of us who were struggling to stay awake. They played animal related games as well interacting with everyone in the Zoo.

Sam Foster was one of those who braved the nightshift at the DJ Zoo, and he is also one of the original's who haven't slept a wink.

In the street and on Tiger Cam was George Mills, who tried his best to speak to the few people who were in the University, but he unfortunately had no luck.

Only 13 more hours to go!!

Hour 21 - Listen in with Daddy

A brand new show for Smoke Radio and probably one of the most surreal experiences that I will ever experience at this University.
Bill brought a unique twist of story telling, games, and kids TV themes between the hours of 6 and 7 am.

George and Sam from the first years took over the camera duties after Lewis left and held the show together well.

Paddington Bear also showed up but he was too shy to go on camera. Another special guest showed up with fifteen minutes left; luckily for us though it was Luke Shasha who was getting ready for his show at 7am.

Only 14 more hours to go!!

Hour 20 - Jon Holmes

Well over halfway through Smoke Radio's DJ Zoo and Jon Holmes came back to host his solo show at 5am. He was helped by Bill Leuty and Edd Cross. One of whom had gone somewhat delirious by this stage.

5am was the perfect way to wake up to the DJ Zoo, if you'd have already fallen asleep.

During the show, Smoke TV's Lewis left after putting in an impressive shift. Leaving the radio team in charge of the TV stream.

Only 15 hours to go now!!

Hour 19 - Upload

Gary Pounder certainly got into the spirit of the Zoo while presenting his new music show 'Upload'. During his slot of 4-5am we had a very special guest on the Smoke Radio shoutbox. It was either someone pretending to be Greg James or it was actually the Radio 1 DJ supporting his prodigy, Mr Pounder.

While Gary was flying through his pacey show, the first years were somewhat flagging. Above is George and below is Sam.

Only 16 more hours to go!!

Hour 18 - The Rubber Soul Show

My show came in at Hour 18,  and it was my first ever live Solo show so I was quite nervous. The show itself plays the best of new and old Soul, as well as Motown, Tamla, early RnB, Blues and Jazz.
The show had an International feel about it without messages on the shoutbox from far flung destinations such as the US, Malaysia and St. Ives.

Edd had resorted to his sleeping bag by 3am in the morning. Let's hope the animals will leave him alone throughout the night.

Only 17 more hours to go!!

Hour 17 - The Asian Hour

Rajen Jotangia brought the Asian Hour to Smoke Radio's DJ Zoo for Hour 17. The show which plays the best of Bollywood and Bhangra music started at 2am.

Massimo took over the camera work for Rajen's show with help from his Panda.

In the Smoke Radio Cinema, Wall:E was entertaining those who wanted to have a quick snooze and relax.

Only 18 more hours to go!!

Hour 16 - The Nic and Nat Show

The victorious duo from Matty and Manish's Soundclash, Nic and Nat, arrived to present their show at 1pm after a brief pit stop at the Undercroft for Messi Mondayz.

The show featured everything that you'd expect from Nic and Nat with some great cringe moments as well as interaction with their audience in the Zoo.

Lil Ravers was lucky that Smoke Radio still has an audio stream as visuals would probably have been too much for her this morning.

She was probably annoyed that her producer Edd had eloped and joined Nic and Nat for their show.

Only 19 more hours to go!!

Hour 15 - Janner and the Yank

A great show filled hour 15 with Janner and the Yank transforming the Zoo into an American friendly zone.

It was the first time that I had listened to the show and I was pleasantly surprised as both presenters effortlessly linked together.

Two other people who link effortlessly together are Massimo and Rhianne, who were enjoying the show from the Smoke Radio Cinema.

Only 20 more hours to go!!
